The necessity of using organic fertilisers in the agricultural field cannot be overemphasised. Agricultural produces using this kind of fertilisers are not only good for health, they are considered to be a lot tasties than the foods produced by using chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Moreover, plant and animal waste-based fertilizer protects the soil nutrients which are in decline due to various natural and manmade catastrophes. This was the theme of a recent Rajshahi workshop on “Uses of Organic Fertilizer in Protecting Soil Health” organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Earth Lover Fertiliser Limited.
According to an expert of the workshop, improving the chemical and physical properties of soil like its structure by acting as binding agent, the organic matter enhances a favourable air-water status of soil from which plant and micro-organisms can take air, water and nutrient elements. But chemical fertiliser, on the contrary, destroys the essential properties of soil.
According to an estimate more than 30 lakh people in the country are suffering from various diseases, including the lethal ones, due to prolonged consumption of un-organically produced foods. The number of cancer patients is increasing and doctors are attributing this to chemically produced or treated foods.
While consumption of organic foods is beneficial for health and use of organic fertilisers protects soil heath, the fact of the matter is, in the world’s most densely populated country Bangladesh, the percentage of organic foods in the country’s food chain is less than one per cent. Therefore, use of organic fertilizer ought to be enhanced.
Firstly, there are many farms in the country that produce and sell organic foods. But these farms are not being able to survive because of fund constraints. The government can extend soft loan to these farmers so that they can remain in the field and market. Besides this, the government’s various entities including Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) can take up campaign programmes for using chemical fertilisers among the farmers.
If the farmers are trained on how effectively they can make organic fertilisers many of them can revert to conventional natural methods of cultivation as much as possible. Not long ago, our farmers depended on organic fertilisers for food production. Farmers also need to be taught about the integrated pest management (IPM) which is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management. This method takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides. This kind of pest management would also significantly contribute to protecting the naturalness of the soil.
