Festivity marks DU iftar parties

DU Correspondent

Huge festivity is noticed at Dhaka University in the every evening of Ramzan as numerous students, both present and former, arrange iftar parties on the campus to break the daylong fasting together.
Besides students, visitors and various organisations, mostly based on different regions of the country, arrange iftar parities in small or large groups every day. The largest gatherings usually take place at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), including TSC Road Island, on the campus.
Apart from TSC, Arts Faculty, Business Faculty, Madhur Canteen, Hakim Chattar, Curzon Hall, Law Faculty and several other places see large gatherings, with people sitting in circles, every evening since Ramzan began.
Students of other institutions such as Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka College, Eden College and different private universities also arrange iftar parties on the campus. “It has been a tradition to arrange iftar parties every year during Ramzan,” said Monjurul Ekram, a fourth-year student of Political Science department at the university.
The entire campus starts to take a different look mostly in the afternoon when organisers of iftar programmes come to the campus to select venue and menus of iftar.
Although iftar items are mostly collected from the roadside vendors, foods from different well-known restaurants are also seen in their hands.
Most of the iftar parties are arranged on the ground under the open sky and old newspapers are used as mat to sit on. On the holidays, the gatherings increase in a large number.
On Saturday, some students who gathered in front of the TSC auditorium said they took iftar with their friends in a familiar environment.
Nur Mohammod, a student of Bangladesh Garment Manufactures & Exporters Association University  said, “It is the month of Ramzan and it has become almost a tradition that very often we take iftar at TSC as old friends come together. Actually, it makes a great opportunity for us to get united.”  “I always enjoy taking part in iftar with my Muslim friends every day in spite of being a Hindu. We want to see such religious harmony across the country,”  Said  Sudipto Kumar, a 4th year student of the Philosophy department.
The situation is almost same in all residential halls of Dhaka University and in front of Curzon Hall area along with Rokeya Hall, Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, Bangladesh-Kuwait Moitree Hall and all the dormitories of the university.
A large number of students were seen taking Iftar sitting on the rooftop of Mohsin Hall of the university.  Like Mohsin Hall, thousands of residential students also arrange Iftar this way in front of their hall premises, on rooftop and corridors and also at the hall mosques.
Some students also expressed their dissatisfaction over the unhealthy Iftar items available at the shops on the campus.
“I really miss my home where I took Iftar with my family members in a fresh environment but here I have to arrange Iftar such ways,” said Himu, a 4th year student of DU Sir AF Rahaman Hall.
