Winter to set in soon

Special Correspondent

The monsoon withdrew only three days ago on Saturday and dry weather took over for transition to winter. But the average day temperature remains at 32–34.6 degrees Celsius, as it was in Dhaka yesterday. On Monday, the city experienced a maximum temperature of 34.7 degrees Celsius, something meteorologists said was more than the normal average at this time of the year. The sky over the country, as well as over the city, was partly cloudy and there was a dust storm in the Hatirjheel area, catching pedestrians unawares yesterday afternoon. It was followed by a little rain in the north of the capital at Agargaon.  Later, there were traces of rain, but they were not enough to lower the temperature.
In the south-eastern coastal resort town of Cox’s Bazar, people were greeted by a drizzle that measured only 9mm. Weathermen said such weather during transition from the rainy season to winter is normal. The days are sultry before cool air starts blowing from the snow-covered mountains of the Himalayas.
But how long will that take? The Met office said night temperature would start falling in the next 72 hours. North-western India has already started feeling it. Winds started blowing from the north and north-west yesterday. But winter remains far away from the plains of the Bangladesh delta. Not before the middle of November nights will get really cool, and the winter chill would be felt from late December.
