Nirob likely to be Juba Dal president

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD

The new committee of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal is likely to be announced any day, said BNP sources. The BNP high command has already finalised the list of leaders of the party’s youth wing. It has been learned that the incumbent secretary general of Juba Dal, Saiful Islam Nirob, might be made its new president. Former Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku is likely to be chosen as the secretary general, the sources added. The names of Juba Dal acting president Abdus Salam Azad and joint secretary general Rafiqul Islam Majnu are also doing the rounds as the prospective president and secretary general, respectively. A source close to the BNP chairperson said Nirob is almost certain to be made the president of the organisation, but there is a little doubt over whether Tuku or Majnu would get the secretary general’s job. Tuku is more likely to be selected, the source added. “Madam (BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia) has had a series of meetings with party senior leaders and Juba Dal leaders to decide on the leadership of the organisation,” said the source.
The last committee of Juba Dal led by Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Saiful Alam Nirob was formed in 2003 for three years. The chairperson wants to form a new committee of the party’s youth wing combining new and old leadership. A Juba Dal leader said the previous committee consisted of 225 members. “It would be better if the committee is limited to a small band of dedicated leaders now,” he observed.
The Juba Dal president resigned from his post after being selected a joint secretary general of the BNP after the party’s March 19 national council in Dhaka. Acting president of Juba Dal, Abdus Salam Azad, said the party chairperson is likely to announce the new committee of the organisation very soon. “The tenure of the last committee expired a long time ago. Formation of a new committee is now in the final stage,” he said. Azad, who has been given a fresh assignment in the BNP’s new committee as an assistant organising secretary, said the chairperson would choose whoever she believes would be beneficial to the organisation. Azad also said if the chairperson gives him the responsibility of being the president of the organisation, he would “take it up with humility”.
