3 financiers ‘identified’

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) additional commissioner Monirul Islam yesterday claimed that they have identified three financiers of the Holey Artisan Bakery attack. He was addressing a press conference at the DMP Media Centre in the city. Monirul, also the chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, said the trio has been identified as Dr Rokon Uddin, Tanveer Quaderi and Major Zahid.
Dr Rokon has left the country for Syria to join the Islamic State (IS), while the other two have been killed in anti-militant operations in their dens. According to Monirul Islam, Dr Rokon, a former registrar of Bangladesh Shishu Hospital, gave Tk. 80 lakh to the New JMB to carry out the attack. Tanveer donated the sale proceeds of his Uttara flat, and Major Zahid gave away his full pension. Tanveer died in the Azimpur gunfight with police, while Major Zahid was killed in a special operation in Rupnagar. Replying to a question, the CTTC boss said the old JMB is trying to come together with the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) under a single banner. On Monday evening, the CTTC arrested seven suspected members of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) with guns, machetes and a large cache of looted goods, including gold jewellery and cash, from Dhaka’s Tejgaon area, said a DMP spokesman. The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Kashem alias Kawsar alias Kashu, 20, Nazmul Hasan alias Nayan alias Noresh, 23, Mohammad Rashed alias ‘Kakolir baba’ (Kakoli’s father), 27, Mohammad Sentu Hawlader alias Jahid, 26, Mohammad Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Shuro alias Akash, 20, Mohammad Abdul Baset, 22, and Mohammad Jewel Sarker alias Sohrab alias Sarker, 32. The militants were also involved in robberies in different parts of Dhaka. The money they had looted was used for their organisational activities. Monirul said 67 ‘bhoris’ of gold jewellery, Tk. 600,000 in cash, four guns, five magazines, 10 bullets, nine machetes, and various other looted goods, including a television set, a laptop, and a motorcycle, were seized from those arrested.
