Transport workers go on strike
Gaibandha: Transport owner and workers of Sadar upazila went on an indefinite strike from Tuesday morning following a dispute with transport owners and workers of Gobindaganj upazila over bus routes, reports UNB.
Abdur Rashid, president of Gaibandha Motor Workers’ Association, said Motor Owners’ association of Gobindaganj upazila launched bus services in different routes of Sadar upazila without the approval of the district motor owners’ union.
Misappropriated ‘food-friendly programme’ rice seized
Gaibandha: Local administration seized eight tonnes of rice misappropriated from a food support programme in Khatiamari area of Phulchari upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.
According to officials, 16 tonnes rice was allotted to Khatiamari area under the ‘Food-friendly Programme’ of the government to be sold to the ultra poor families at Tk 10 per kg. The rice was scheduled to be sold out by dealer Azhar Ali by last Saturday.
However, the dealer stocked the rice in a house of one Mokarram in the area for selling on the black market later, said Abdul Halim, upazila nirbahi officer of the upazila.
On information, a team of the administration led by the UNO conducted a drive in the house and seized 173 sacks of rice yesterday morning. The dealer and owner of the house managed to flee from the scene.
Drug-addict handed over to police

A mother handed over her drug-addicted son to police in Kochua upazila.
Sources said Sajeda Begum filed a complaint against her son Naser Ahmed Polash, 30, of Amujan village, with Kochua Police Station on Saturday as the son damaged furniture of the house for realising money from his mother to buy drugs. He also tortures his mother for money.
Police took him into custody on Monday and recovered drugs from his possession. Later, he was produced before a mobile court led by Kochua UNO Ashraf Hossain   who sentenced him to two years imprisonment.
Man to die for killing wife

A court here on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2001. Jessore Special and District Judge Nitai Chandra Saha pronounced the verdict on Monday afternoon. The convict was identified as Helal Uddin, 40, a resident of Shikerpur village of Sadar upazila of Barguna.
According to the prosecution, the convict strangled his second wife Rupali Begum and threw her body into a septic tank at his rented house in Barandipara area of Jessore town on June 14, 2001. Later, a murder case was filed.
