Dot bangle (.bangla) domain would be opened to mass users from December 16.
State Minister for Posts and Telecommuni-cations Tarana Halim yesterday, came up with the announcement at a press conference at her ministry office in the capital.
“We will finalise the policy, terms and conditions, pricing and managerial manpower for the dot bangla domain soon to open it for mass users from December 16,” she revealed.
Tarana said before open it for public, all the procedures are needed to get the approval of the board of directors of the state-owned Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), the assigned organisation to handle the domain.
The International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICAAN) has officially allotted the dot bangla (.bangla) internet domain to Bangladesh on October 4 after long procedures.
Indian state West Bengal and Sierra Leone, one of whose official languages is Bangla, had also applied for the internationalized domain name (IDN) label-dot bangla.
“Through capturing the domain, Bangla would strengthen its presence in cyber space,” hoped the state minister.
Replying to a query regarding pricing, Tarana Halim said they have primarily set prices and conditions, but all those are needed to be approved by the BTCL board.
BTCL would seek application from the users after open the .bangla domain.
Earlier, ICANN-approved another domain label for Bangladesh as dot bd or .bd. From now on, .bangla is Bangladesh’s own Unicode domain label.
It is the second country code top-level domain (TLD) for Bangla websites.
According to the BTCL, total registered users of .bd have reached at 36,500.
