Nearly five months after the execution of war criminal and its ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has made its senior leader Maqbul Ahmad its new ameer, UNB reports. Maqbul Ahmad, who has been serving as acting ameer of the party since the arrest of Nizami on June 10, 2010, took oath as the elected ameer of the party on Monday, said a party press release on Monday.
Jamaat-e-Islami chief election commissioner Moulana ATM Masum administrated the oath at 1Oam, it said. The release, however, did not mention where the oath-taking ceremony was held.
It said Maqbul was elected the party ameer for the next three years through a secret balloting of the party’s rukans (committed members). The Islamist party rukans cast their ballots at the party’s 83 organisational districts during August 16 to September 5, maintaining secrecy in the voting process. Maqbul hails from Feni district.
