Sylhet college student Khadiza Begum Nargis yesterday (Monday) underwent a successful surgery on the right hand. The surgery was carried out to repair the muscle chains of her hand that were cut while she tried to protect herself from machette blows by a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). Mesbah Uddin, consultant of the orthopaedic department of Square Hospital, told The Independent: "The surgery began at 2.30pm and continued till 4.00pm. The condition of her right hand will change rapidly."
"Her left hand became paralysed due to injury on the head. The decision for a surgery on this hand will be taken later,” said Dr AM Rejaus Sattar, associate consultant, neuro-surgery, and brain and spine surgeon of Square Hospital He also said it would take two and three months for Khadiza to come around. Khadiza’s brother, Shahin Ahmed, said: “We are happy that we are getting help from the government.” The BCL's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit leader, Badrul Alam, stabbed Sylhet Government Mahila College student Khadiza on October 3 while she was on her way home after appearing for an exam. Later, other students caught Badrul on the spot and handed him over to the police. Khadiza was first taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was shifted to Dhaka as her condition deteriorated.
