BSS

The construction work of incomplete Baradaha Bridge over Bangali River on Gaibandha-Nakaihat-Gobindaganj Road in the district is nearly completion amid much enthusiasm to the locals, reports BSS. According to sources the construction work of the much awaited bridge started in 1997 and the government allocated for 12.33 crore Taka for the bridge. After building 3 spans out of 5, the contractor stopped the construction work due to fund constraint.
In 2009, the contractor began the work but after doing some work of a span the development work of the bridge was stopped again due to fund constraint and river bank erosion.
By this time, the course way of the river was changed resulting the necessity of construction of additional two spans was felt.
In this situation, the officials of Roads and Highways (RHD) took a plan to construct a total of seven spans including additional two ones of 253.56-metre length and 24-metre with bridge.
Later, a project proposal seeking required fund also sent to the head office, Dhaka for its approval, said sub divisional engineer of RHD ABM. Khorshed Alam.
After getting fund, the development work of the incomplete bridge resumed in December last after five years and it was going on in full swing at the direct supervision of the RHD officials here, he also said.
Abdul Matin, a social worker of Nakaihat area of the upazila, said all the locals were frustrated as the construction work of the bridge was not completed in 17 years due to different grounds including fund constraint.
The ongoing work of the bridge has ushered in hope to the locals again and to see the finishing work of the bridge they thought the bridge would be opened for vehicular movement within short time, he also said. At this, the locals would transport their perishable food items to the upazila headquarters quickly for sale resulting; the socio-economic condition of the farmers would be changed, he further said.
Talking to BSS, executive engineer of RHD Mahbubul Alam Khan said over 95 percent work of the bridge had already been completed and the rest work of the bridge would be finished very soon.
