Stress on climate change adaptation

Ensuring of sustainable food security was not possible without increasing crop production despite adverse impacts of climate change

RANGPUR: Experts at a discussion have stressed on adaptation to climate change, evolving time-befitting cropping patterns and newer technologies to keep agricultural output increasing for ensuring food security, reports BSS.
They made these observations at the post-rally discussion held on Town Hall premises here in observance of the World Food Day- 2016 with the theme of "Climate is Changing, Food and Agriculture Must Too" on Sunday.
The district administration jointly with Department of Agriculture Extension, Department of Food and NGOs chalked out programmes to observe the day.
Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar led the rally on the city streets with participation of government and NGO officials, students, teachers, civil society members, public representatives, farmers, professionals and local elite. With Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim in the chair, the Deputy Commissioner attended discussion as the chief guest.
Executive Director of 'Alor Prottyasha' Latifa Begum Lira, Programme Manager of RDRS Bangladesh and development expert Merina Ahmed and Executive Director of 'Rajendrapur Samaj Kallyan Sangstha' Ferdousi Begum, addressed it, among others.
The speakers said that ensuring of sustainable food security was not possible without increasing crop production despite adverse impacts of climate change. Terming agriculture as the worst affected sector following adverse impacts of climate change, Merina Ahmed urged the responsible nations to reduce emission of green house gases for overcoming the emerging risks to ensure food security.
"Bangladesh is the worst victim of global warming and climate change to face challenges for ensuring its national food security along with overcoming frequent natural disasters and calamities," she added.
Latifa Begum Lira stressed on adaptation to climate change through innovating time-befitting agricultural technologies and stress tolerant cereal crops to increase food output.
Narrating laudable success achieved by the present government in increasing food production, the chief guest urged the scientists concerned for evolving climate resilient crop varieties and newer cropping patterns to attain sustainable food security.
