The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, BIMSTEC, just concluded in Goa, India, aiming not only to create a stronger more friendly regional cooperation but also to forge a pact to counter the rising threat of extremism.
At the event, the prime minister of Bangladesh has underlined the need for all countries to work together and form an indissoluble bond to resist attempts to polarize society by radicals and insurgents.
We also feel that once the seven countries join hands and decide to cooperate in matters related to social security, the threat of extreme elements can be minimised.
However, Bangladesh, as a country, aspiring to become a middle income state by 2021 should avail of all the opportunities presented by this forum because this association offers the chances for us to expand our market and explore new possibilities.
In the current global scenario, economic plus social cooperation is pivotal for any nation to maintain stability in growth and, therefore, Bangladesh would be wise to constructively exploit all the arenas opened through this initiative.
In recent times, there have been talks of a super highway linking Bangladesh Myanmar and India. We believe that to make that dream a reality, the platform of BIMSTEC is essential.
From another angle, this association should also give the chance to discuss more openly about the Rohingya issue, which has, from time to time, tested Bangladesh Myanmar relations.
Obviously, the major objectives here should be consolidating economic ties with the hope of the Indian PM to engage the BRICS nations of fast emerging economic powerhouses, providing the thrilling expectation of a larger fraternity.
The Chinese premier just visited Bangladesh and in the wake of several profitable bi-lateral agreements, further interaction via BIMSTEC will only be for our good.
This year, the recurring theme had been the determination of all sides to fight any form of radicalism and quite a few leaders at BIMSTEC have stated unequivocally their resolution to be stern in dealing with any disruptive elements.
As we welcome such a firm position let us also ensure that in the name of uprooting divisive elements, democratic rights of the masses will not be trampled upon.
It’s always prudent to remember that sustained growth spearheaded by a robust economy will happen only when fundamental human rights are honoured.
Looking from another perspective, the BIMSTEC can be significant in triggering a cultural and sporting exchange, creating a social link among the nations.
In the end, let this gathering foster compassion, understanding in the spirit of inclusion.
