Tripura people allege bid to grab land

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

Alleging that a section of Bangalis wanting to grab an acre of land on a hillock had assaulted them, Tripura people living at Reserve Para in Talbaria village of Mirsarai upazila in Chittagong have complained of insecurity. According to the victims, the aggressors are Awami League supporters. The ethnic people held a press conference yesterday (Saturday) to make the allegation. The Jatiya Mukti Council (JMC), a left-leaning political party, organised the conference at the Chittagong Press Club.
While reading out a statement at the conference, Amir Abbas Tapu, member secretary of the JMC, Chittagong, said that on June 20 they visited the spot where the ethnic people came under attack. “The assault took place on June 19. Some AL men, in collusion with the local people's representative, attacked the Tripura community. They also felled some 300 fruit bearing trees on a hillock,” said Tapu.
“Around 10 Tripura people sustained injuries when villagers, led by Nirupati Tripura, tried to stop the AL men from cutting down the trees,” added Tapu.
“About 1,500 Tripura people have been living here for around 70 years. We have been cultivating the land belonging to the forest department. We went to the Mirsarai police station to lodge our complaint, but policeman refused to register our case.
The local UP chairman did not take any initiative in this regard either. We know all the attackers.
They are AL supporters. They even threatened to kill us if we proceed with the matter. We are living in constant fear of further attack,” Nirupati Tripura said.
