83 primary schools closed due to lack of UNDP funds

Some 83 formal primary schools were closed down this month as they ran out of fund.
All the schools were being run with the funds provided by the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP).
The chairman of the Bandarban hill district council, Kyasoihla, said the UNDP had been funding 83 formal primary schools with classes from one to five level since 2009 in remote villages in Ruma,Thanchi, Lama, Ruangchhari, Alikadam and Naikhangchhari upazillas in the district. But from June 2015 no fund allocation has been made by the donor agency.
He said about 10,000 tribal child students will now be deprived of educational facilities in remote areas of the seven upazilas in the district. A total 300 teachers will be jobless.
Chairman Kyasoihla said the district council authorities have communicate with UNDP officials and requested then to continue funding for all the 83 primary schools.
 District Primary Education officer Sahidul Azam (DPEO) has said the 83 primary schools were established by the tribal communities with the financial help of the UNDP in remote villages. All the teachers were recruited by the Hill district council austerities.
