7,075 villages get power supply in Rangpur region

RANGPUR: A total of 7,075 villages have been brought under electricity supply network in Rangpur division bringing in a significant change to the livelihood and lifestyle of the rural people, reports BSS. According to Rangpur zonal office of Rural Electrification Board (REB), out of total 9,611 villages in the division, 7,075 were connected to the national power grid while the rest of 2,536 villages would be brought under power supply network by December, 2018.
“We have given over 8.80 lakh residential, industrial and other connections in the past seven years from 2009 to August 2016,” said Superintending Engineer (Current Charge) at REB’s Rangpur Zonal Office Md Ramjan Ali.
Besides the power connection, construction works and commissioning of 35,596 kilometres power distribution lines had been completed for providing 15.62 lakh connections in different villages in the division.
He said special steps had also been taken to provide power supply on priority basis to community clinics, union digital centres and other important establishments.
Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hassan Ahmed said that rural electrification expedited the pace of socioeconomic development in the division. “As a result, various industries such as cottage and agro-based industries and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) are now flourishing fast, creating jobs and generating income for many in the division,” he said.
