Women farmers need responsive media support, say experts

RAJSHAHI:  Women farmers need responsive media support for their recognition as their contribution to ensuring food security, particularly in the agriculture sector is significant.
Besides, there is a need of reflection of the women contribution to the national overall development.
The observation came at a press conference held in Rajshahi Metropolitan Press Club on Saturday evening. Food Security Network Bangladesh organised the press conference in observance of the International Day of Rural Women- 2016, reports BSS.
Main thrust of the press conference was to sensitize the media personnel on how to depict the women farmers issues in the media both print and electronics. Paribartan and Actionaid, two non-government development organisations, supported the event.
Divisional head of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association Advocate Deel Sitara Chini and development activist Farjana Islam addressed the press conference as focal persons.
President of the press club Mominul Islam, general secretary Azizul Islam and local unit head of Paribartan Rashed Ibney Obayed also spoke.
Advocate Deel Sitara said the womenfolk work hard for meeting protein demands of their respective families.
They also work relentlessly in the fields of farm management and homestead production. 
But, unfortunately due to lack of their land ownership many of them don't get the privileges of agricultural subsidies being provided by the government every year.
Apart from, the women farm labourers don't get equal wages to the men. The disparity needs to be addressed at ones. Despite of equal work to male in farming fields, the female agricultural workers especially coming from the 
ethnic groups are still facing wage disparity in the region especially in vast Barind tract.
She called for removing their existing barriers which are being faced regularly. To ensure rights to food, there is a need of establishing legal framework.
Time has come to implement an agricultural reform programme to protect the rights of the small and marginal working farm labourers for the sake of their food security.
