South Africa Twenty20 skipper Faf du Plessis expected a tough fight from Bangladesh in the first Twenty20 International today despite winning the warm-up match effortlessly.
“It’s pretty good to have a good start yesterday but we also appreciate that their main side will be a lot harder,” Plessis told the reporters yesterday ahead of the first match.
“We got the things that we wanted to get out of the way like adjusting to the heat, so it was a pretty good day yesterday, but we are not too blaze knowing that tomorrow will be a lot more difficult.
He thought the youngsters of Bangladesh are capable of springing surprise given they are unknown to them so far.
“I think there are a few players, the nice thing about the Bangladeshi team at the moment is the new guys coming through and that’s specially sometimes in T20 cricket can be dangerous. We haven’t seen or played against them and T20 cricket is a lot shorter. You don’t have two overs where you can, as a batsman, look the bowler out and then try to play him differently. You have to make decisions a lot quicker. Sometimes the unknown is also very dangerous.”
Before the start of this series, South Africa played only two Twenty20 matches against Bangladesh and that were in their own condition, where Tigers lost in both matches, which were held in Newlands of Cape Town in 2007 and Johannesburg in 2008. But T20 skipper said that they will try to habituate with the condition though they have on full idea about the condition.
South African team is formed with the blend of pace and spin alongside the world class batting line-up. The right-handed batsman said that they will play their normal game using their strength what are in their arsenal.
“We obviously got a squad of 13 we played in. that means two extra players. Two extra players were bowlers yesterday. So, that’s why, it was little bit more obviously seam options yesterday. When it comes to your XI your balance is slightly different. So now the balance will be obviously the normal plan whatever seamers and couple of spinners,” Pretoria-born all-rounder thinks.
He terms the new rules for the One Day and Twenty20 as good and said that the bowlers will get advantage more than batsmen from it.
“The Twenty20 versions actually bowlers prefers more because of the protection of five fielders in boundary. In that sense, I don’t think, it’s as much a batting game. Obviously the condition will play a role for Twenty20 cricket that is lot of runs and lot of sixes and boundaries. If it’s not case than we have got the bowling skill to make sure on the day that we win,” Du Plessis said about the new rules for shorter formats, which will be come into effect from the first Twenty20.
“I think from structure point of view it’s important that you play a lot of cricket in Twenty20. That’s the best way you can close the gaps. The rest of the countries play a lot of Twenty20 and that one of reason why Indian has been so successful for a long time because they play a bulk of Twenty 20 games. All the other countries are trying to get a similar format and Australia one’s really working well for them. It’s important for Bangladesh cricket that the Twenty20 structure is really for the players that’s coming through.”
