DNCC mayor’s goodwill
Sir,
Inhabitants of Dhaka are happy to get two progressive minded Mayors of Dhaka City Corporation who are committed to make Dhaka a modern city. We sincerely hope that both the Mayors will be successful in implementing their development programs of course with all assistances from the Government. We wish their success.
Being a resident of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), I have been witnessing some action programs to keeping the city clean. Measures have been taken to improving the drainage system by cleaning the drains and clearing soil/dirt from the inlets of the covered drains. Some motivational programs have been taken to make people conscious about the importance of keeping environment tidy and clean.
Credit of course goes to DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq. Cogratulations.
Meanwhile I have noted with concern that the soil removed from the drain’s inlets have been kept in a heap by the side of the streets which ultimately moves to the inlets with rain water to blocking the inlets again.
To get things done properly I would like to suggest the following:
--all tasks relating to one job should be done at a time.
--community workers’ team should be formed to keep vigil so that people do not throw garbage/dirt to places other than the fixed ones.
--motivational campaign should be organized with the participation of inhabitants to create awareness not to throw dirt/refuses to the ground from the apartments but to dispose those in the fixed places in the house or in the locality
--introduction of minor fines, issuance of warning letters etc. may work well to educate the norms
There are other sectors, such as, urination, spitting hither and thither needs motivational campaign and some pragmatic actions.

Irresponsible leaders
Sir,
This relates to a staff correspondent’s front page headline report, published on Friday 3rd. July, in a local English daily. It relates to the Supreme Court's factual most appropriate judgment, in the case related to the violent rioting that resulted in many burnings of shops and offices, and uncalled for injuries and death of innocent people; under the banner of political opposition. These lawless killings and destruction were provoked and organized by the leaders of the opposition political party, by employing paid hoodlums called activists; who acted in a totally lawless manner in many towns and cities of Bangladesh. Very rightly the government has taken them to task.
The lower court, possibly also afraid for their safety, were reluctant to punish the political criminals; but the Supreme Court, rightly called a 'spade a spade'; and justified the need for punishment for those responsible for such uncalled for violent crimes against the people. Politicians should be made to pay for their misdeeds. The party is known for its dark deeds; and the corrupt practices of the leader of the opposition's family is known internationally; that led to a multinational company from being banned from business in one country; which knew about the whole matter.
This is the ill-reputation of the opposition; that is known to those who count. It is indeed a shame for all the politicians in Bangladesh; and we the people will be happy that that cannot be let off scot-free. "Quo Vadis" the democratic opposition; that accepts illegal actions as 'facts of life'?
