9 deals on the cards

Dhaka is ready to ink no less than nine deals with Beijing during the 22-hour-long official visit of Chinese president Xi Jinping, which begins today. The additional secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD–Asia wing), Abul Mansur Md Faizullah, told The Independent that among the nine agreements, one is a grant, two are framework agreements (FAs), three memoranda of understanding (MoUs), and three loan agreements (LAs). The deals are: agreement on economic and technical cooperation (grant); Dasherkandi sewerage treatment plant (FA); multi-lane road tunnel under the Karnaphuli (FA); plan of special assistance projects of disaster prevention and reduction (MoU); plan of special assistance projects of construction of bridges (MoU); strengthening investment and production capacity cooperation (MoU); procurement of six vessels (three new product oil tankers and three new bulk carriers of about 39,000 DWT) (LA); Dasherkandi sewerage treatment plant (LA); and a multi-lane road tunnel under the Karnaphuli.
Under the deal ‘Strengthening investment and production capacity cooperation’, a total of 28 projects has been incorporated, which will be implemented within the next five years, sources said.
The large projects are: conversion of MG railway track into DG railway track in BR’s Akhaura to Sylhet section (USD 1.7 billion); establishing digital connectivity (USD 1 billion); Bangladesh Garments Industrial Park; Padma Bridge rail link project (USD 2.5 billion); construction of marine drive expressway and coastal protection works from Shitakunda to Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar (USD 2.85 billion); Dhaka-Ashulia elevated expressway project (USD 1.39 billion); Dhaka-Sylhet four-lane highway project (USD 1.6 billion); expansion and strengthening of power system network in the area under the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) (USD 2.0 billion); power grid network strengthening project under the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd (PGCB) (USD 1.3 billion).
