Fishermen jailed for defying hilsa netting ban

A 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of hilsa begins on Wednesday to protect safe spawning of the popular fish during the peak breeding period. Around 7,000 square kilometre area of rivers in 27 districts have been earmarked as the breeding ground of the hilsa.
Our Patuakhali Correspondent says: Mobile court yesterday sentenced seven fishermen to one year imprisonment and fined five others for catching hilsa, defying the ongoing 22-day ban.
Patuakhali district fishery officer Iqbal Hossain said the mobile courts in separate drives held the fishermen and seized two lakh meters current nets with 100 kilograms hilsa in last two days.  The seized fishing nets were burnt and the hilsa were distributed among distressed people.
Coast Guard members detained fishermen Harun, 35, Halim, 42, Milon, 18, Salahuddin, 20, Alamgir, 40, Shakil, 20, Zamal, 25, Bellal, 22 and Farid, 25 from Tetulia River. They also seized 1 lakh meters current nets and 42 kilograms hilsa from Paira River in Mirzaganj upazila. The law enforcers also detained Yunus Howlader, 40, with 10 kilograms of hilsa from Dashmina upazila. Three were held from the Andhermanik River of Kalapara upazila.  
10,000 meters current nets were seized from Ramnabad River of Rangabali upazila yesterday. Our Noakhali Correspondent reports: A mobile court sentenced 10 fishermen to two years imprisonment for catching hilsa from the Meghna River on Wednesday. Coast Guard members conducted a drive and seized an engine boat with 5,000 meter current net.  They were later produced before the courts of executive magistrate Nuruzaman, UNO of Sadar upazila, who delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.
