The day-long hartal, enforced by five Bangalee settlers organisations demanding revocation of the draft Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Land Dispute Resolution Commission (amended) Act 2016, was observed  peacefully in the three hill tracts districts yesterday.
On August 1, the cabinet approved the draft of the ‘Chittagong Hill Tracts Land Dispute Resolution Commission (Amendment) Act, 2016′ curtailing the discretionary power of the commission’s chairman in decision making, aiming to put an end to land disputes in the CHT.
Five Bangalee settlers’ organisations—Parbataya Nagarik Parishad, Parbataya Bangali Chhatra Parishad, Parbataya Samaodhikar Andolon, Parbataya Gano Parishad and Parbataya Bangalee Chhatra Oikyo Parishad—called the shutdown on Wednesday protesting the move.
No vehicle was seen plying the roads in Rangamati while no long-route bus left district town.
Police Superintendent of the district Tariqul Hasan said a large number of police personnel have been deployed in several points of the districts to fend off any trouble.
Our Khagrachhari correspondent adds: Five Bangali settler groups observed first phase of 48 hours of strike in the district demanding the cancellation of a law passed to resolve land disputes in the region. The first phase of 24-hour hartal has began on 6.00am yesterday and ended on 6.00am today while five Bangali settler groups to go for second phase hartal from 6.00am on Sunday and scheduled  to end on 6.00am on Monday if the government not cancel the act immediately, said the leaders of the organisations.
Activists of these organisations set tires on fire in front of Land Dispute Resolution Head Office in Khagrachhari.
Parbataya Bangali Chhatra Parishad central unit organising secretary Mohammad Asad Ullah, its district unit president Mohammad Mainuddin termed the land commission act as discriminatory and said Bengali people to face eviction threat if the act is not cancelled.
