Tamim reaches 5,000 runs milestone

Sports Reporter, Chittagong

Even though the series was pretty disappointing on personal ground and as far as the success of the team was concerned, opener Tamim Iqbal reached the milestone of scoring 5,000 runs in one-day international as the first Bangladeshi cricketer.

It’s a fitting landmark for a batsman who holds the all batting records of his team in all three formats of cricket, something which no batsman in the world could do so far. But Tamim’s form at the top was disappointing for his side albeit no one can expect that he would make runs in every match and in every series. The opener scored just 76 runs in the three matches he played against England including 45 in the third match during which he went past 5000 runs in ODI cricket. He was expected to covert the 45 to a healthy 50 or 100 but the manner in which got dismissed was pretty frustrating for the crowd in Chittagong which is also his home ground.
Tamim Iqbal opened the match with a tally of 4962 runs. When he completed his 38th run en route his eventual score of 45, he became the first Bangladeshi player to score 5000 runs in ODI cricket history. He has now 5007 runs to his name in 159 matches at an average of 32.30 after making his debut way back in 2007 against Zimbabwe.
Tamim Iqbal has also scored the most number of centuries for Bangladesh with 7 centuries to his name. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is closing in on the 5000 landmark. He has aggregated 4566 runs in 163 matches with the average of 34.85, the highest among the top 10 batsmen with most runs for Bangladesh. Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim recently crossed the 4000 run mark in the second ODI against England in the same series.
Mohammad Ashraful, the star of the last decade of Bangladesh, had to curtail his ODI run tally at 3468 runs in 175 matches. He remains to be the most capped Bangladeshi player in ODIs. However, his average has been on the lower side being just 22.37. Mahmadullah is nearing the 3000 run mark with 2854 runs to his name in 131 matches. Opening batsman Shahriar Nafees (2201 runs) and former captain Habibul Bashar (2168 runs) are the only other cricketers who have crossed the 2000-run mark in ODIs for Bangladesh.
Current opener Imrul Kayes in close to the milestone and has 1754 runs in his kitty in 62 ODIs at an average close to 29.
