Businessman jailed for producing substandard medicine

KHULNA: A court here on Wednesday sent a businessman to jail in a case of substandard medicine production and selling across the country, reports BSS.
Judge of Khulna Judicial Magistrate Court Md. Nasir Uddin Farazi ordered to Kazi Shahnewaz, owner of Shahnewaz Sea Food, to jail with fixed hearing date of a remand prayer on October 25, 2016.
Kazi Shahnewaz, chairman and managing director of Shahnewaz group also former president of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) and ex-senior vice president of Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).
Earlier, Investigation Officer (IO) Sub Inspector of Rupsha Police Station Shajedul Islam placed Shahnewaz before the court in the case.
Additional Deputy Director (DAD) of RAB-6 Nazmul Huda filed a case on Wednesday morning against Kazi Shahnewaz and three employees of the company named Zakir Hossain, Sazeeb and Habibur Rahman and 12 to 13 unnamed people, with Rupsha Police Station under Special Power Act in 1974, said officer-in-charge (OC) of the Police Station Rafiqul Islam.
Quoting case statement, OC said, a team of RAB-6 raided Shahnewaz Sea Food, an export oriented frozen fish processing factory at Char Rupsha area under Rupsha upazila in Khulna on Monday evening and arrested Kazi Shahnewaz along with huge substandard medicines and medicines product machineries.
The recovered medicines are 4 lakh pieces of different tablets and capsule, around 2.5 lakh empty packets of different brand medicines companies kept with hundreds of sacks, cosmetics, powder and medicine making huge raw materials, he said.
Commander of RAB-6 Additional DIG Khondokar Rafiqul Islam told BSS, acting on secret information, a special team of RAB raided the Prince Herbal and Pharmaceuticals, a sister concern of Shahnewaz Group at the two storied building of Kazi Shahnewaz at Rupsha upazila.
“Substandard medicines were produce here and marketing in the name of brand medicine companies’ across the country and different hospitals since long,” he said.
