Five members of a family were burned to death as a fire broke out at their house at Jongaon village in Pirganj upazila early yesterday, reports UNB. The deceased were identified Kharesh Chandra, a member of Dinajpur traffic police, his wife Keya Rani, 38, their children Nice, 13, and Nirnoy, 8, and Keya’s sister Sandhya Rani, 22, all residents of the village.
Amiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Pirganj Police Station, said the fire broke out at the house of Kharesh
after a 440-volt electric line snapped and fell on the roof in the early hours.
As the house caught fire from the snapped electric wire, the oil tank of a motorcycle kept inside the house exploded, killing Keya and Sandhya Rani on the spot and injuring three others.
Firefighters rescued Kharesh, his daughter Nice and son Nirnoy and took thme them to Sadar Hospital where doctors referred them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
However, Nice and Nirnoy succumbed to their injuries around 10:30am while Kharesh died around 11:30 am, added the OC.
Meanwhile, the district and police administrations formed two probe panels to look into the incident, said Farhad Ahmed, Superintendent of Police of the district.
