The Awami League (AL) yesterday hailed Chinese president Xi Jinping’s forthcoming visit to Bangladesh as an achievement of the Sheikh Hasina government, with ruling party leaders saying the visit would have a positive impact on the country’s politics and economy.
Xi Jinping’s upcoming trip to Bangladesh proves that China, too, is with the Sheikh Hasina government, along with India, they claimed.
“It is an achievement of the present government. Especially after the January 5 elections, many thought that the government did not have foreign support. But Xi’s visit will prove that other countries, including China and India, are with Sheikh Hasina,” AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif told The Independent.
Hanif said the Chinese president’s visit will also prove that world leaders are pleased with the present government for its development activities and vision to turn the country into a developed state by 2041.
AL international affairs secretary Lt. Col. (retd) Mohammad Faruk Khan said the visit would enhance Bangladesh’s importance in world politics. “Besides, we expect the Chinese delegation to invest a huge amount of money in Bangladesh, further boosting our country’s economy,” he added.
According to a Chinese foreign ministry statement on Monday, Xi will also tour Cambodia and India. During his October 13–17 tour, the Chinese president will first visit Cambodia, followed by Bangladesh, and later travel to Goa in India to attend a BRICS summit.
