The air-conditioning systems of six Bangladesh Biman aircraft out of the 12 in service malfunction most of the time, causing immense suffering to passengers on both domestic and international routes. The passengers of BG-44 flight from Kuwait to Dhaka had complained that its air cooling system was out of order last Saturday. The passengers of domestic flight Dash-8 from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka had raised a similar complaint recently.
Similarly on July 17, the passengers of Boeing 777-200 from Sylhet to London were left sweating profusely because the air cooling system of the plane was not functioning properly. The passengers alleged that they had pointed out the matter to the cabin crew, but to no avail. Biman authorities have also admitted to the problem. “The allegations of passengers are true in some cases. Some of the planes are very old and have technical problems,” said AM Mosaddique Ahmed, managing director and CEO of the Bangladesh Biman Airlines Limited.
He, however, added that all the aeroplanes in the Biman fleet do not have such problems. Aviation expert Kazi Wahedul Alam said, “The only reason for such problems is that the aircraft are not maintained properly.” Alam further said that Biman needed to address this issue immediately as some of these planes were selected for direct flights from Dhaka to New York. At present, the national carrier has 14 aircraft, out of which 12 are engaged in active operations. Biman was air borne on March 7, 1972 with flights to Chittagong and Sylhet and on March 9 to Jessore. Thus the domestic operation of Biman began.
On 4th March, three days before start of domestic operation, the first flight of Biman’s international operation landed in Dhaka from London with 179 passengers on board. The aircraft used in the flight was a chartered one from British Caledonian. In 2007, Bangladesh Biman Corporation turned into a Public Limited Company. E-ticket and BSP were introduced.
In 2008, the airline went into an agreement with Boeing Aircraft Company for acquisition of 10 new generation aircraft of 4 Boeing 777-300ER, 2 Boeing 737-800 and 4 Boeing 787 the biggest ever deal in the history of Biman as well as the country.
On February 20, 2014, Biman operated the historical final-flight of world’s last passenger DC10-30 on Dhaka – Birmingham route and thus recording its name in the annals of world aviation history.
