British Council delegation calls on education minister
A delegation of British Council led by its Deputy Director Jim Scarth on Monday called on Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid at the ministry office in the capital.
During the meeting, the delegation informed the minister about their initiatives in developing secondary education particularly on providing training to the teachers and programmes for developing English literature in Bangladesh, said a press release.
They also discussed about the formation of a "taskforce" between two the countries for extensive cooperation of the British government in the development of higher education in Bangladesh. The minister thanked the British Government and the British Council for their cordial assistance in education sector in Bangladesh, the release added.
Terrorist held with firearms
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) in a drive arrested a listed ‘terrorist’ of CMP with a foreign made revolver and two bullets beside city's Colonel Hat Jamea Mosque on Sunday night.
The arrested ‘terrorist’ was identified as Mohammad Mamun, 31, son of Mofizur Rahman, hailed from Goolpahar area in the city. On a tip-off, a team of the Akbarshah thana police conducted a raid in the area and nabbed Mamun with a foreign made revolver and two bullets, said Sudip Kumar Das, officer in charge of Akbar Shah thana.
A case was filed with Akbar Shah Thana in this connection, he added. Besides, another six cases including murder and explosion were pending against him with different police station in the city.
One jailed for trading drug
A Chittagong court in a verdict here on Monday sentenced a drug trader to 10 years imprisonment for possessing and trading foreign made liquor, court sources said.
The 5th additional Metropolitan Session Judge Nur-E-Alam, delivered the judgment convicting Shah Alam, hailed from Gohira area under Anwara upazila in the district. The court also fined him Taka 20,000, in default to suffer one year more imprisonment.
The prosecution story is in brief that the accused person had been keeping and peddling drugs at his Anwara residence for long. A team of Narcotics department arrested Shah Alam from his residence with 25 thousand cans of foreign made beer on December 7, 2006.
An inspector of Narcotics department filed a case with Anwara thana against Shah Alam in this connection. The court examined a total of seven prosecution witnesses out of nine and held the accused convict, court sources said
DMP files 700 drug cases, arrests 934 in capital
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has so far arrested 934 suspected drug peddlers along with a huge quantity of illegal drugs in the last 16 months till September last.
A total of 700 cases were filed against the arrestees with different police stations under the DMP, an official release said. Police recovered 94,487 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, 3,296 bottles phensidyl, 160.396 kilograms cannabis, 10. 400 kg heroin, 60 bottles foreign liquor, 471 cans of beer, and 9605 ampoule injections, from their possessions.
2 held with 500 bottles of liquor
Detectives arrested a man and his son along with 500 bottles of liquor from Deogaon area in Savar upazila on the outskirts of the capital early Tuesday.
The arrestees were identified as Tapan D Costa and his son Harry D Costa.
Officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) AFM Sayed said tipped off, a team of the detectives conducted a raid at a liquor factory in the area and arrested its owner Tapan and his son Harry in the dead of night. The law enforcers also recovered 500 bottles of liquor from the spot. A case was filed in this connection.
