The biggest religious festival for the Hindu community Durga Puja ended in Rajshahi and Barisal yesterday with the immersion of idols in the city.
The Hindu devotees of the city joined traditional Bijoya Dashami procession from various temples and Mandaps under the auspices of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, Rajshahi city and Sarbajanin Puja Committee. The procession was ended on the bank of the River Padma after parading different city’s streets.
On the brink of immersion, the worshipers in their tearful eyes bade farewell to the mother deity, Durga and her children – Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh – through the immersion of their idols in the water wishing Durga’s return next year.
The Hindus of the city celebrated the Bijoya Dashami amid festivity and enthusiasm by visiting their relatives’ homes to share sweetmeats when married Hindu women put “Sindoor” (vermilion) on each other’s forehead on the occasion. AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, President of Rajshahi city unit AL, along with leaders and activists also visited various temples and Mandaps of the city and exchanged pleasantries of Durga Puja with the Hindu community’s devotees.
