Massive police deployment in Barisal

The Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) has made robust security arrangements in connection with the immersions of the idols of Goddess Durga, scheduled for Tuesday evening. 
Sharodiya Durga Utsob—the main religious festival of the Bengali Hindu community—was celebrated for five days in 66 Puja mondops (pandals) across Barisal city. The festival concludes every year on the day of Bijoya Doshomi, with the immersion of the idols and images of the deity in various rivers, canals and ponds, accompanied by solemnities, religious rituals, and exchange of greetings. 
The immersion rituals are scheduled to end by 9pm across the country, but will go on for a while longer in Barisal due to the traditional programme, according to Surangeet Datta Litu, city secretary of Barisal Puja Udajapon Porishad. 
Datta said the ‘sindur khela’ ceremony has been scheduled in various city mondops from 3pm to 8pm, while Bijoya processions are scheduled to begin at 4pm. He added that since most city mondops have been set up near ponds, the pandal authorities and patrons can take their time to bid farewell to the Goddess.
BMP deputy commissioner (DC) (south) Golam Md. Rauf said additional armed police would be deployed at every corner of the city from Tuesday morning to ensure that the festival is peacefully concluded. Briefing sessions have been held today at all the four police stations. A total of 801 police officers, including 16 assistant commissioners and 26 inspectors, has been deployed in civilian dress or uniform in the city area.
