As part of the government’s move to bring all foreigners working in Bangladesh under a database, two taskforces have stated collecting information about foreigners and their employers in Dhaka and Chittagong, reports BSS.
Software is now being developed to preserve the information of the foreigners. Information on arrival and departure of all foreigners will be preserved in this software in future.
“We have already formed two taskforces which are collecting information of the foreigners and their employers in Dhaka and Chittagong,” first secretary of National Board of Revenue (NBR) Abul Kalam Azad told the news agency.
“We will be able to bring all foreigners working in Bangladesh under this database in the next fiscal year,” said Azad who is also the member secretary of the inter-ministerial steering committee headed by BNR chairman Nojibor Rahman to look after the tax dodging by foreigner workers.
“We are hopeful that this database would help curb money laundering and smuggling also,” he added.
Azad said foreigners have been working in many organizations but they are not providing the NBR correct information about them.
Besides, there are many foreigners staying in Bangladesh illegally which is also a threat for the national security, he added.
According to NBR, around 500,000 foreigners have been working in different organizations but only 11,000 have been paying tax regularly.
