Bangladesh staged a stunning comeback by scripting an emphatic 34-run win over England in the second ODI, inspired by a fabulous all-round performance of the captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza to level the three-match series yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Mashrafe smashed a 29 ball-44 runs knock to help the side compile a respectable 238 for eight in the testing condition before his opening spell of 6-0-21-3 caused England’s sensational collapse. The England who snatched a 21-run victory from the jaws of defeat in the first match to inflict a mental pain and spark a public criticism towards Bangladesh finally were bowled out for 204 in 44.4 overs as Mashrafe fittingly claimed the last man Jake Ball to finish four for 29 in 8.4 overs.
Bangladesh thereby kept the hope alive to take the winning streak of bilateral series to lucky seven. The third match in Chittagong on Wednesday will decide the fate of the series.
England were struggled on a pitch that was slow-paced, and Mashrafe’s sly fast bowling which suited pitch nicely extended the agony as they were left a precarious 26 for four. Mashrafe moved the ball in astonishing fashion to make the life of the openers—James Vince and Jason Roy—hell and got rewarded with the wicket of the former.
Shakib Al Hasan who opened the bowling then removed Ben Duckett for duck before Mashrafe struck twice to dismiss dangerman Roy (13) and first match’s centurion Ben Stokes for naught.
English captain Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow resisted and played beautifully in a pitch where English were traditionally used to be vulnerable. They weathered the first spell of Shakib and Mashrafe watchfully before came on all guns blazing against the other bowlers. As they raised a prospect of
taking the match away from the Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed struck and forced Bairstow edged behind the wicket.
That ended the 79-run partnership between them and made Bangladesh outright favourite.
Buttler and Moeen Ali could only give the side a sense of hope but Nasir, on his comeback match, took away Ali for four before Taskin dealt a double blow, getting rid of Buttler and Chris Woakes.
With 132 for eight, England were nowhere to win the match.
Buttler was the highest scorer for the side with run-a-ball-57, sending the ball across the ropes seven times.
Bangladesh won the video review against Buttler after which he involved a verbal spat with the local
players as it seemed Mahmudullah was trying to provoke him.
As England were reduced to 132 for eight, Adil Rashid raised a prospect of stunning comeback, adding to significant partnerships with David Willey and Jake Ball but Mashrafe sent the packed stadium delirium taking out last man Jake Ball who made 21 ball-28. Rashid was unbeaten on 33.
Apart from Mashrafe’s four, Taskin grabbed three for 47.
Earlier, Mahmudllah Riyad held together the innings in impeccable fashion amidst the wickets tumbling while Mashrafe Bin Mortaza went onslaught in the late moment to lift Bangladesh from a dire strait.
Riyad played a timely 75 runs knock when the team was in deep trouble as most of the batsmen threw away their wicket after getting set.
Mashrafe smashed 44
and added 69 off 48
with Nasir Hossain after Bangladesh found them in tittering 169 for seven in 42nd overs.
The captain smacked three sixes and two fours in his whirlwind knock that actually lifted the team spirit. Fast bowler Chris Woakes used the short balls to good effect to remove two openers—Tamim Iqbal (14) and Imrul Kayes (11) who made a century in the first match.
Jake Ball, who claimed five-for on debut as the first England bowler, dismissed Sabbir Rahman to leave Bangladesh 39 for three after which Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim combined for a 50-run partnership.
Rahim played an injudicious pull off Ball to throw away his wicket on 21, leaving Mahmudullah dig in the deep.
England bowlers employed slower delivery and stuck with the plan of short balls and created an enormous pressure on the home side. Riyad found a way to deal with it properly but lacked enough support. He hit six fours in 88 balls knock before trying to a paddle-sweep against leg-spinner Adil Rashid and got out.
He took a video review but the snicko proved the ball didn’t touch his glove.
Mashrafe was pre-determined to attack regardless of the outcome.
He hit six in the second ball he faced and took the side past 200 which seemed to be tough at one phase.
Mashrafe finally was run out in the penultimate ball.
Nasir Hossain who replaced Mosharraf Hossain the team was not out on 27, justifying his inclusion. Fast bowlers Chris Woakes, Jake Ball and leg-spinner Adil Rashid claimed two wickets apiece.
