Bangladesh will play a crucial match today when they will face Bhutan in the AFC Cup qualifying play off at Changlimithan Stadium in Thimpu.
May be it is the most important match for Bangladesh football team they have ever played, as the fate of Bangladesh football depends on the result of this game.
If Bangladesh could win the match, they will move into the qualifying round of the AFC Cup and the door of Asian top level football competition will be wide open for them to play regularly, otherwise they would have to join in the lowest level competition in the Asian football.
In fact the match turned into a do or die encounter for Bangladesh after a shocking goalless draw at home ground, but Bangladesh still have an opportunity to make it success when they will need simply a draw with scoring goals.
Bangladesh, who drew their home match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, squandered plenty of scoring chances.
Bangladesh playing almost one-sided match throughout 90 minutes time produced at least half a dozen scoring chances but failed to score even a goal while the striker disappointed spoiling some of the easy opportunities.
Only Shakhawat Hossain Rony spoiled four close range chances came to his way while Sohel Rana, Jewel Rana and Nabib Newaz Jibon also joined with him, as Bangladesh had to leave the ground with 0-0 draw.
Frustrated head coach Tom Saintfiet called the veteran striker Zahid Hassan Emily, Enamul Haque, playmaker Mamunul Islam and Sohel Rana to exhilarate the strength of forward line eyeing to score goals in the match.
Record is still in Bangladesh favour while in the last 11 meetings Bangladesh won eight and rest of the three matches ended in draw.
According to information from Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Tom Saintfiet in the pre-match press conference yesterday in Thimpu said, "It would a big battle for us, we have to win to qualify but it would be something difficult, as Bhutan will play at their home ground, home condition and will be backed by home crowds.”
Saintfiet saw only the disadvantage for Bangladesh team is the altitude while Bhutan is 2300 meter above the sea level.
“For Bangladesh team only altitude is problem, weather or turf pitch will not problem, hopefully we will overcome the hindrance,” said Tom Saintfiet.
