One killed as bus overturns
A young man was killed and 10 others injured as a bus overturned in Muralipur area on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Rakibul Islam, 35, hailing from Godagari upazila. Amanullah, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station, said the Chapainawabganj bound bus from Rajshahi overturned on the road in the area around 7.30pm as its driver lost control over the wheel, leaving Rakibul dead on the spot and 10 others injured.
Girl strangled by own scarf on rickshaw wheel
A schoolgirl was killed as her scarf got entangled with one of the wheels of an auto-rickshaw at Sonatala of Kaliakoir upazila on Mouchak-Phulbaria regional road on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Sadia Akter, 10, a class V student of Pinprasit Government Primary School and daughter of Lokman Hossain, a resident of the area. Sadia’s father Lokman said the family was returning home from a visit to Sadia’s grandfather’s house in Thengarband area by an auto-rickshaw van on Saturday night. Suddenly, Sadia’s neck scarf got entangled with one of the wheels of the rickshaw, and at one point, her neck also got tied up in the mess at Sonatala, choking her to death.
Youth dies from snakebite
A young man died from a snakebite at Mumala in Tanor upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul, 33, son of late Mafiz Uddin of the area. Locals said a venomous snake bit Shahidul as he as asleep in his room early on Saturday. Later, he was whisked off to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
CJ to address SC bench officers Oct 27
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha will address bench officers and assistant bench officers of the apex court at a programme on October 27. “All the bench officers have been asked to be present at the programme,”said Additional Registrar (Administration and Judicial) of the High Court Division, Md Sabbir Faiz. The programme will start at 11 am at Supreme Court auditorium.
World Hospice and Palliative Care Day observed
The World Hospice and Palliative Care Day was observed on Saturday in Bangladesh through holding different programmes in the capital.
The programmes included rally, film show, photo exhibition and seminar in the capital, a press release said. This year’s theme of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2016 was: “Living and dying in pain: It doesn’t have to happen”. As part of the day’s programme, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) along with 13 other organisations arranged a film show, alongside photo exhibition and scientific seminar at Hotel Sonargaon.
