Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya yesterday said some 32,000 urban volunteers were imparted training to assist regular rescuers during the disasters, including earthquake or fire incidents, reports BSS.
"The volunteers' training programme on disaster preparedness is to face disasters in fair and effective way and to reduce the losses of lives and properties," he told journalists at the very outset of a rehearsal on earthquake preparedness at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Country's leading rescue agency Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), in association with the Department of Disaster Management, organised the rehearsal programme on the occasion of ‘International Day for Disaster Reduction-2016’.
With the theme ‘Tell techniques to reduce risk factors’, the International Day for Disaster Reduction-2016 will be observed on October 13.
Maya said the members of FSCD are capable of facing the disaster and as per the guideline of International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), the FSCD in the meantime formed nine Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams to increase the capability of the regular rescuers and volunteers during the time of emergency.
The minister stressed on the need for conducting rehearsal at each ward level in Dhaka to build up mass-awareness about the earthquake preparedness.
