Part 2
Anwarul Ansari
We went to other places of interest towards southern part of Ethiopia.
I was reading a travel guide book about Ethiopia from ‘Lonely Planet’. While the bus was travelling on the highway, I saw a flock of ostriches running beside the road. After that we arrived at a paleontologist site in the south of Ethiopia where group of people found some bones and skeletons. I also learned something good about the work of paleontologists. The guide showed us the remains of some prehistoric bones of humans and animals. There was a small museum where they exhibited some paleontologist relics.
Then we went to a site which is know as Tiya, which is a graveyard from an ancient time in Ethiopia. The special thing about Tiya is people were buried in sitting position, not in lying position. When the government was going to demolish that site, UNESCO marked it as a world heritage park.
After finishing the tour for Day 2, we went to a hotel which is located in the middle of the Great Rift Valley with a huge lake. The road was bumpy and was filled with stones. It took nearly two hours to arrive at the resort where we were going to spend one night.
The Sabana Beach Resort hotel is actually an eco-friendly resort with excellent view of the Great Rift Valley. Then I went to my room with my two roommates. The room was great, we had great view of Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia. After that I took a quick tour of the resort and it was magnificent place for a traveller to spend in the Great Rift Valley.
The next morning we checked out from the hotel as our guide was going to take us on a boat trip to an island, which was located in the middle of the lake. Mulu, our guide, was going to show us the island where there is a church that once housed the Ark of the Covenant.
In the early morning, we departed from Sabana Beach Resort to the boat yard which took about 14 minutes. Then we had to go in a small long boat, which carries few passenger.
The special thing about Zulu Island is it was once the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, which was brought from Israel to Ethiopia in the 11th century. It took more than one hour to travel from land to the island via boat. We hiked to the church.
Then we visited a local village where they were performing a coffee ceremony. Coffee is important in Ethiopia and it is one of the most expensive coffees in the world because it has great fragrance and special aroma from the highlands. I tried the coffee cultivated by local farmers, it was incredible and had great aroma and taste.
After that we went back to Addis Ababa, which took five hours and it was almost 8 o’clock in the night. The next morning, I took my flight back to Dar-es-Salaam which took nearly two-and-a-half hours. Once we reached the airspace of Tanzania, I could see clear turquoise blue water from 22,000 feet. Certainly, it was the awesome school trip ever.
