Tahmid, Hasnat cleared of charges under section 54

Police found no specific evidence of Tahmid Hasib Khan’s involvement in Gulshan’s Holey Artisan Bakery attack, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday, UNB reports.
Tahmid and former North South University teacher Hasanat Rezaul Karim was also discharged from a case filed under section 54.
The DMP chief came up with the information while talking to reporters after inspecting the security arrangements at Dhakeshwari temple ahead of Durga Puja in the city.
Tahmid secured bail from the court and he was also acquitted from the charges under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in connection with Gulshan terror attack as police did not find any  evidence against him,” he said adding, “He was relieved from the charges as per the law.”
“We cannot call anyone either guilty or innocent as per our wish as we do that only based on information and evidence we receive,” Asaduzzaman said.
Earlier in the day, a court acquitted Toronto University student Tahmid Hasib Khan of the charges brought against him under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in connection with Gulshan terror attack. On Monday last, Tahmid Hasib Khan, who was arrested under Section 54 of the CrPC in connection with the Gulshan terror attack, was released on bail.
A team of the CTTC unit arrested Tahmid on August 3 from the city’s Bashundhara area for his suspected link to the attack.
Tahmid was rescued along with 12 others during the commando operation at the Holey Artisan Bakery at the city’s diplomatic zone Gulshan on July 2 following a 12-hour hostage standoff.
Apart from two police officers, 20 hostages, including 17 foreign nationals, were killed by militants, while five militants and one suspected associate of the attackers were killed during a commando operation in the café on July 2.
Meanwhile, former North South University teacher Hasanat Rezaul Karim was also discharged from a case filed under section 54.
Hasanat, however, was not released from the jail as he was shown arrested in another case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the Jul 1 terror attack, as a key accused. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Nur Nabi passed the order .
Earlier Inspector  Humayun Kabir, of counter terrorism and transitional crime unit, also  the investigation officer, appealed for clearing Hasnat.
He informed  the court that Hasnat Karim was earlier shown arrested in the case. So, he should be discharged of the section 54 charge.
