Now, a bank for the police, by the police

Now, a bank for the police, by the police

The Bangladesh Police is going to set up a commercial bank, aptly named "Police Trust Bank (PTB)" soon.

The proposed bank would be a sister concern of the Bangladesh Police Welfare Trust (BPWT), sources at the police headquarters and the home ministry said.
The police headquarters have prepared a draft proposal for setting up the bank. The plan is to arrange a paid-up capital with members of the police force buying shares in the proposed bank, the sources added.
Fatema Begum, additional inspector general of police (finance and development) of the police headquarters, told The Independent that they are planning to set up a scheduled bank for the police force, on the lines of Shimanto Bank, Ansar VDP Unnayan Bank and Trust Bank Limited meant for other forces.
“We've started the process of setting up the bank, and a proposal will be sent to the ministries concerned seeking their approval,” she said.
The senior police officer also said the police force is large and the country’s main law enforcement agency. “Our members and people of the country will benefit from the bank,” she added.
The senior police officer said the headquarters and main branch of the proposed bank would be set up at a commercial building in Dhaka.
Sources said that according to the draft proposal, a police constable can buy only one share of Tk. 20,000 of the proposed bank, while a sub-inspector or inspector can buy two shares of Tk. 40,000 each and a cadre officer can buy two shares of Tk. 50,000 each.
The police headquarters have asked their men (constable to senior officers) to send proposals of buying shares of the proposed bank within December this year, the sources added.
The main objective of the bank is to provide easy-term loans to police members for better livelihood, housing and pension schemes, as well as for agricultural, marriage and medical purposes. It would also disburse salaries of personnel of the border force.
The bank’s profits will be provided to retired police members, wounded freedom fighters, and serving police personnel and their family members, according to the sources.
Common people can also avail of its banking services, as at other scheduled banks. However, family members of policemen would get priority in getting employment at the bank, the sources claimed.
The Bangladesh Army has been operating a scheduled bank, Trust Bank, since 1999, while the BGB is operating the Shimanto Bank.
The Ansar-VDP Unnayan Bank, a specialised bank for Ansars and village defence parties, has been in operation since 1995.

A total of 56 commercial banks are currently operating in the country.
In 2013, Bangladesh Bank approved licences for sponsors of nine new banks amid criticism from different quarters, who argued that more banks were not needed for a small economy like that of Bangladesh.
