Mahfuzul made chief of Food Safety Authority
Mohammad Mahfuzul Hoque has been made as new chairman of Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA).
He was succeeded by Mustak Hasan Muhammad Iftekhar. Earlier, Mahfuzul Hoque, an additional secretary of the government, served as a member of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).
Receiving honors and masters degree from Economics Department of Chittagong University, Hoque was an officer of 1984 Batch of Bangladesh Civil Service.
35 shanties gutted in capital
A fire gutted 35 shanties of a slum at Hazaribagh in the old part of the city yesterday afternoon.
The fire took place at Boubazar Slum adjacent to the sand field at Hazaribagh around 1.55 pm and gutted some 35 shanties but none was repotedly hurt in the fire, deputy assistant director (DAD) Md Mamun Mahmud told BSS. Six fire fighting engines rushed to the place of occurrence and doused the flame at around 2.30 pm, he said. The cause behind the fire and extent of damage could not be known immediately, Mamun added.
Minor boy drown in Savar
A minor boy met water burial as he drowned into a beel (water body) at Chapain Taltala in Savar upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Nayem, 2, son of Nazmul Huda, a resident of Chapain Taltala. Locals said Nayem was playing with his sister Ayesha on the bank of the beel in the village in the afternoon. At one stage, he slipped into the water body. Later, locals recovered the floating body of Nayem. A pall of gloom descended the area after the incident.
Man killed in road accident
A man was killed on the spot after being hit by a speedy truck at Darshona point on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway in the city on Tuesday afternoon, police sources said.
The deceased was identified as Yunus Ali, 50, of nearby Coatghaghotpara area. He was the leader of Darshona Dry Fish Whole Sale Market Workers' Association.
The accident occurred when a Syedpur bound truck crushed Yunus Ali as he was crossing the highway at around 3 pm. Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Kotwali Thana ABM Zahidul Islam confirmed the accident and death.
Government committee to oversee overloaded vehicle
The government yesterday formed a 20-member high-powered committee to oversee the overloading in vehicles and maintaining roads and bridges in a proper manner. Additional road transport and bridges secretary will head the committee while the other members include: the representatives of transports and workers associations, different concerned ministries and agencies.
The committee was formed at a meeting at a restaurant in the capital yesterday with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obadiah Quader in the chair.
The committee will hold its next meeting on October 13, said a meeting source.
JS body reviews hi-tech park progress
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology yesterday reviewed progress in the work of three hi-tech parks being built in Gazipur, Jessore and Sylhet.
The committee discussed financial and structural support to Bangabandhu hi-tech park at Kaliakoir in Gazipur, Sheikh Hasina hi-tech park in Jessore and Sylhet hi-tech park as well as progress of the work and the stipulated time for completion. After discussion, the meeting decided that the standing committee members would visit to the construction sites as early as possible.
