The department of environment (DoE) yesterday fined Tk 46.31 lakh against three factories for polluting environment. The monitoring and enforcement wing of the DoE summoned the owners of the three factories at its Agargaon headquarters to appear before the environment court yesterday.
The factories are—B Brothers Garments Limited, Messer’s Syba Textile and Bangladesh Petrochemical Company Limited in Narayanganj. These factories were involved in polluting environment by discharging untreated liquid wastes directly into the near by wetlands and farmlands.
Director of the DoE (monitoring and enforcement) Anwar Hossain Hawlader found them guilty and fined them Tk 46.31 lakh for polluting both environment and ecology of the areas.
The environment court fined Tk 26.08lakh for B Brothers Garments Limited, Tk 19.96 lakh for Messer’s Syba Textile and Tk 25,000 for Bangladesh Petrochemical Company Limited under Environment Conservation Act 1995 after hearing.
A team of enforcement wing found these factories have been operating without effluent treatment plant (ETP), Anwar Hossain Hawlader told this correspondent.
He said, “These factories were also involved in polluting environment and ecology of the areas seriously by discharging poisonous untreated wastes. It is a clear violation under environment conservation law,” he said. Besides, they also discharged liquid wastes directly into a nearby canal by closing their ETPs, he added.
The DoE also directed the factory owners to discharge the wastes by setting up ETPs.
