All slums in city to come under water supply by ’17: Mosharraf

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday called upon all concerned to work in a coordinated way to implement the government’s target of bringing all slums in the city under the legitimate water supply coverage, reports BSS.
“The present government has fixed a target of supplying water to all slums in the city by 2017,” he said speaking as the chief guest at a function in the city to give water connections to the people of Kalshi slum at Mirpur with the cooperation of UNICEF and Water Air.
Held at Khamarbari Krishibid Institute auditorium, the function was presided over by Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) Managing Director Engineer Taksim A Khan. Alhaj Ilias Uddin Molla, Dhaka WASA Chairman Prof Dr Habibur Rahman and UNICEF Representative Edouard Beigbeder were present as special guests.
The minister issued directives to Dhaka WASA to take steps so that the city faces no water crisis in the next dry season.
He said the country will turn into a desert if the excess use and abuse of ground water could not be stopped.
The ground water level is declining fast because of its reckless use, he said, adding that a dangerous situation will be created if the over dependence on ground water could not be controlled.
Referring to the importance of using surface water, the minister said the government has taken initiatives to develop water points (ponds) across the country to supply water to nearby villages.
“Initiatives have been taken to ensure drinking water for all,” he added.
The Kalshi slum got 278 legitimate water connections to serve 6,000 families directly and 13,000 families indirectly.
