The Awami League, oldest political party in the country, will be holding its 20th triennial central council session in a befitting and gorgeous manner. It is scheduled for October 22 and 23. Earlier, the party constituted 11 sub-committees headed by central leaders. These sub-committees have been working relentlessly to make the council session a success. Convenors and member-secretaries have held a series of meetings with their fellow members and finalised the task before the session. Ten days before the session, important installations in Dhaka will be illuminated; the Hasina government's success story, the long, historic track record of the Awami League, and its traditional politics, achievements and development activities would be projected on large LED screens installed in different areas of the city. Documentary films have been made by the publicity and publication affairs sub-committee. This year, the party’s slogan for the council session is ‘Moving ahead relentlessly on the development highway, It’s time for Bangladesh to hold its head high’.
Party insiders said Suhrawardy Udyan, venue of the session, will wear a eye-catching look on the occasion. The main stage will resemble a boat, the election symbol of the AL. Its height will be 25 feet from the ground. A 35-feet LED screen will be set up at the back of the stage. In front of the stage, a gallery will be erected with 230/125 feet transparent glass poles for 7,000 guests. A pandal will be set up to accommodate 40,000 persons.
The AL joint general secretary, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, also convenor of the beautification sub-committee, said: “Our preparations for the council are going on in full swing. The entire Dhaka city will get a new look before the council session. At least five LED screens will be set up at strategic points, including bus terminals, railways stations and Sadarghat. The government’s success stories and achievements of the Awami League since its inception will be projected on these screens.”
AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office has already been illuminated with chandeliers.
“We have completed 80 per cent of the task. The sub-committees are also working to make the session a success,” AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said yesterday.
The AL national council is expected to be attended by 6,570 councillors, over 150 politicians of 27 democratic countries, 30,000 delegates and representatives of political parties of the country.
In front of the main stage at Suhrawardy Udyan, the carnage of August 15, 1975 will be projected through “sand art”. A total of 2,000 volunteers will be deployed at the entry points of the council venue. After the inaugural speech by Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and submission of the report of general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, foreign guests might address the council’s inauguration ceremony on October 22. Preparations have been made in such a way. On the second day, October 23, the main session of the AL national council will be held at the adjoining auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, with exclusive participation of councillors from across the country. At the most important council session, the president and general secretary of the party will be elected.
