Minister talks tough against irregularity

UNB

No irregularity in implementing the ‘Food-Friendly Programme’ will be tolerated, said Food Minister Quamrul Islam yesterday, reports UNB.
“If dealers or food officers indulge in corruption or irregularities in the Food-Friendly Programme, they’ll face graft cases to be filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) and others,” he told a meeting in the capital.
The Directorate of Food arranged the views-exchange meeting with district food controllers and regional food controllers at Khadya Bhaban to discuss the problems and potentials of the Food-Friendly Programme.
On September 7 last, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the new social safety net scheme at Chilmari upazila in Kurigram. According to official sources, about 50 lakh poor families will be benefited under the scheme across the country with the opportunity to buy 30kg rice at Tk 10 per kg a month for five lean months during the dry season.
Quamrul said cent percent transparency must be ensued in preparing the list of beneficiaries for the programme as no corruption will be tolerated in this regard.
He instructed the food controllers to take immediate action if they find any irregularity in the newly-introduced safety net programme.
Food secretary AM Badrudduja and director general of Food Directorate Md Badrul Hasan were, among others, present at the meeting.
