The government is constructing 30 power plants with the generation capacity of 10,743 Megawatt (MW) for uninterrupted power supply across the country, a top official said, reports BSS. “The current power generation capacity is 14,980 MW, covering 78 per cent of the population in the country,” Director General of Power Cell under Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Engineer Mohammad Hossain told the news agency in the capital yesterday.
He said the government’s target is to increase power generation capacity to 24,000 MW by 2021 and with the completion of the 30 power plants the country will get constant supply of power.
Of the 30 power plants, 16 having the capacity of 6,703 MW would be set up under public initiatives, while 14 with 4,040 MW capacity under private initiatives, Eng Hossain said.
“The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has undertaken another 32 projects to increase power generation to 5,259 MW in future. The proposed power plants are now under tender procedure,” he said.
An official said the present government has installed 79 power plants since 2009 to raise the total number to 106. The government has also a plan to construct nine more power plants having capacity of 6,895 MW.
The nation suffered a lot as there were only 27 power plants in the country before 2009. The situation changed fast after assumption of office by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2009, he said.
The official also said the government has also constructed transmission lines and distribution lines for steady supply of electricity, particularly to the agriculture and industrial sectors, for the sake of rapid economic growth to help Bangladesh become a middle income country by 2021.
Besides, the government has been providing various facilities to the private sector to encourage setting up of solar energy plants to meet the country’s growing power demand, he added. The power generation capacity would be 60,000 MW by 2141, according to the government plan.
