Youth goes missing as car plunges in river

A young man went missing as a private car plunged into the Dhaleshwari River breaking the railing of Muktarpur Birdge in Sadar upazila on Friday night.
The missing young man was identified as Jalal Uddin Bhuiyan Rumi, 20, son of Saifuddin Rauf, a resident of Amlapara in Narayanganj city.
M Mosharraf Hossian, in-charge of Muktarpur River Police Camp, said Rumi went to Muktarpur Bridge in the night by a car. Reaching the bridge, Rumi dispatched driver Rubel from the car and started to drive the car himself.
At one stage, as he lost control over the steering, the vehicle fell into the river breaking the railing of the bridge.
On information, divers from Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) rushed to the spot and detected the car in the riverbed, about 60 feet under the surface.
However, they could not recover the car due to strong current in the river till the filing of this report at
10:50am.
Sugar mill workers go on strike in Gaibandha
Gaibandha: Workers of state-run Rangpur Suger Mills and the sugarcane farmers in the mill zone yesterday morning went on a strike demanding to recover the land of the mill from illegal occupation, reports UNB.
The workers in association with the farmers took position at Mahimaganj Railway Station in Gobindaganj upazila of the district and blocked the rail tracks around 8:30am, halting the train communication between Rangpur and Dhaka.
Abdul Matin, president of Rangpur Sugar Mills Workers Union, said a group of local people grabbed some 500 acres of lands of the sugar mill illegally three months back.
As a result, the production of sugarcane as well as sugar has been hampered, he added.
No room for militancy in Bangladesh: IGP
SHARIATPUR: Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque said yesterday militancy will never get any space in the country as the people of the county don’t support it, reports BSS.
“The people of the country are not blind but love religion. And a public opinion has already been created against the social menace for which militancy will never get any room,” he said while addressing a fresher’s reception programme at Majid Jarina Foundation School and College at Bhojeshwar Narkalita village here.
“Police will help the militants who want to return to normal life if they do not commit any criminal offence,” he said, adding that Bangladesh has become a role model for the entire world in terms of combating militancy.
Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Chairman, Prof Md Mahmudur Rahman, deputy commissioner Md Mahmudul Hossain Khan and police super Saifullah Al Mamun, spoke on the occasion, among others.
