Mosharraf Hossain Rubel’s long wait to play an international match finally came to an end when the left arm spinner was drafted into the third ODI against Afghanistan yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The 34-year old played the match exactly 8 years 200 days after his last ODI against South Africa on March 14, 2008. The venue in which he played remained the same but in between he missed 145 ODIs.
He actually broke the record of former chief selector and captain Faruque Ahmed who had to wait 8 years and 144 days to play a match as he played the match against Scotland on May 24, 1999 during the World Cup after his last match against Sri Lanka in December 25, 1990. Since Bangladesh played international match hardly that period, Faruque’s missed a little number of matches.
But it wasn’t the case with Faisal Hossain Decense who had the gap of six years after he got another chance to play against England in 2010 following the match against Sri Lanka in 2004 Asia Cup. He in between missed 131 matches.
Faisal and Faruque notably then got to add just one international match after playing those ODI after a long gap but Mosharraf of course didn’t want to extend the list.
Mosharraf was part of this year’s High Performance specialised squad for spin bowlers but after Venkatapathy Raju, the former India left-arm spinner, concluded his week-long spin camp, Mosharraf left for a family trip to India on August 25. He rushed back by road from Kolkata two days later after getting an SOS from the Bangladesh team management, which is still looking for a replacement for Arafat Sunny. Raju spoke highly about him which is why Hathurusingha chose him to replace Arafat Sunny.
He replaced another left-arm spinner Taijul Islam to get into the final XI for the third ODI. Taijul though finished with economical figure in last two matches, wasn’t as threatening as Shakib Al Hasan who had to take huge load in absence of a perfect partner.
However Mosharraf couldn’t break the unwanted record of the longest gap between dates and the longest between matches. It was the record which was held by New Zealand’s Jeff Wilson who had to wait 11 years 331 days to play an International match between March 1993 to February 2005. He missed a record number of 271 matches in between.
West Indies’s Anderson Cummins waited 11 years 30 days between 1995 to 2007 but he played those two matches for different two countries—1995 for West Indies and 2007 for Scotland.
England off-spinner Shaun Udal had the gap of 10 years 2007 while West Indian Floid Reiffer got his opportunity after 10 years 169 days. Reiffer missed 254 matches, the second highest after Wilson.
Meanwhile, while Mosharraf got back to the side after eight years, fast bowler Shafiul Islam also made room after two and half years. These were the two changes Bangladesh brought from the second ODI.
