Police are currently going tough on human trafficking with capturing 1,000 traffickers and rescuing 517 victims including 286 female and children from different parts of the country in eight months from January in 2016 last, reports BSS.
“We have widened dragnet against human trafficking and so far arrested 951 human traffickers in eight months from January to August last,” said a senior police official.
A total of 483 cases have been lodged in connection with trafficking of 517 people including 186 female and 100 children, he informed. Due to the frantic efforts made by the police, 341 victims of trafficking including 127 female and 78 children have so far been rescued during the period, he also said. Of the arrestees, three traffickers have already been prosecuted, he added.
In accordance with the current UNICEF report, around 400 children and women are being trafficked in each month while another report reveals that approximately 3 lakh women and children belong to the age between 12 and 30 years were smuggled to India alone from Bangladesh in the last decade. The main reasons behind human trafficking in Bangladesh are poverty, gender discrimination, and social exclusion, lack of awareness, illiteracy, and poor governance system.
