Environmental activists yesterday said in order to curb fire incidents in the country concerned government offices should have master plan or road map in removing chemical stores and factories from residential areas and in ensuring safety in using chemical and boiler in industries.
In a round table at Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) office, Abu Naser Khan, chairman of the organisation, came with the observation. Barrister Amirul Islam, special guest on the occasion said that it is high time to for proper implementation of the environment related laws.
Speakers said in old Dhaka innumerable chemical stores, plastic and polythene factories have been built up in unplanned way. These factories have no system for extinguishing fire. Besides, due to narrow paths fire-service vehicles can not reach fire incident spot in time or due to lack of adequate water-bodies it is difficult to control fire. They said industries should have open corridor so that people might escape fire. Electricity lines and gas supply lines should be checked regularly. Building should be made following building codes, they added. They meeting was organised by POBA after 39 people were killed and 50 injured after a fire engulfed Tampaco Packaging Factory in the industrial town of Tongi, 20km north of the capital on September 10.
