Swapnadal staging ‘Chitrangada’ today dedicating to Syed Shamsul Haque

Swapnadal, one of the most vibrant theatre troupes in the country, is going to stage the 50th show of its much-acclaimed production titled ‘Chitrangada’ today at 7pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the city. The play will be brought to the stage as a part of the ongoing 18-day ‘National Theatre Festival’.

Swapnadal dedicated the today’s show of the play to veteran poet and writer Syed Shamsul Haq, who passed away on Tuesday. Syed Shamsul Haq had attended the 25th show of the play as a guest in his lifetime.
‘Chitrangada’ is the 11th production of Swapnadal, written by Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath wrote the play in two different forms or versions. In 1892, when he was only 31-year old, he wrote ‘Chitrangada’ in poetic drama (Kabyanatya) form. But 44 years later, in 1936, he wrote it in dance drama (Nrityanatya) form based on the same story.
Swapnadal has prepared the production ‘Chitrangada’ with the poetic drama version. It may be mentioned that dance drama form of ‘Chitrangada’ is well known, because it has been performed by a good number of organisations. On the other side, the poetic drama version of ‘Chitrangada’ has not been staged regularly in modern stage before Swapnadal.
To pay homage to the greatest playwright and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore on his 150th Birth Anniversary (2011), Swapnadal produced the theatre-production Tagore’s poetic drama ‘Chitrangada’. Swapnadal achieved the cultural grant for making this production from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh.
To note, BSA and Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) have jointly organised the ‘National Theatre Festival 2016’ with the slogan ‘A Mati Noy Jongibader, A Mati Manobotar’, where a total of 58 troupes from across the country is staging their plays at four venues of BSA and Mahila Samiti, Baily Road. The festival will continue till October 11.
