Mohila Dal shake-up shocks many

Afroza made president
RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD

The announcement of a new committee of the Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, the female front organisation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has stunned its front leaders as they were allegedly kept in the dark.
The leaders also expressed their surprise at the announcement of the new committee on the day when party leaders and activists mourned BNP standing committee leader Brig Gen (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah. Shah, who was suffering from cardiovascular diseases, passed away at a hospital in Singapore early Tuesday.
“I was surprised to watch the news on TV channels about the formation of the new committee of Mohila Dal. I was not aware of it,” said Shirin Sultana, the outgoing secretary general of the organisation.
Shirin expressed regret about leaving the secretarial post in the BNP executive committee to work for the Mohila Dal. “Whether I am kept in Mohila Dal or not is not the matter. I just cannot think how the committee was announced on a day we lost a senior leader like Hannan Shah,” she said.

Another leader, who preferred anonymity, said the announcement of the committee came as a bolt from the blue. The leader described the newly appointed Mohila Dal president Afroza Abbas as a “lucky person” as she was appointed because of her husband Mirza Abbas, who is a BNP standing committee member and convener of the city unit of BNP.
Sultana Ahmed has been appointed the secretary general of the Mohila Dal central committee.
BNP standing committee member Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain regretted the announcement of the new Mohila Dal committee on the day the party lost Hannan Shah. “I think it happened due to a communication gap,” he added.
The announcement of the new committee was made on Tuesday through a press release signed by BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu. Tipu told this correspondent that he had handed out the press release to the media as directed by the “proper authority”.
However, he refused to reply to the question of whether party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had directed him to issue the press release.
The release said that the BNP secretary general had approved the committee according to the party charter’s Article 13 and 8 (1) and under BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s direction.
Nurjahan Yeasmin has been made the senior vice-president. Jeba Khan has been appointed vice-president and Helen Jerin Khan, the joint secretary general.
The Dhaka City North Mohila Dal committee was formed with Peyara Mostafa as its president and Amena Begum as general secretary. Rajia Ali and Shamsun Nahar were announced the president and the general secretary, respectively, of Dhaka City South Mohila Dal.
The partial committee of Mohila Dal has been announced after the previous committee led by Noor-e-Ara Safa and Shirin Sultana completed five years.
