Eminent writer Syed Shamsul Haq was lais to rest on the Kurigram Govt College premises in his birthplace in the northern district of Kurigram yesterday.
He was buried in the presence of his family members at 4:50 pm after his third namaj-e-janaza on Kurigram Govt College ground. Thousands of people of all walks attended the funeral prayers..
His body arrived in Kurigram by an Air Force helicopter around 4:20pm. Administrator of Kurigram Zila Parishad and former lawmaker Md. Jafar Ali, Deputy Commissioner Khan Md. Nurul Amin, district Awami League president Aminul Islam Manju Mondal and local press club president Mominul Islam Manju received the body from Cultural Affairs Minister Ashaduzzaman Noor and former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak from the helicopter.
Earlier, two namaj-e-janazas were held in the capital. People from all walks of life thronged the Central Shaheed Minar to pay their last respect tribute to writer, poet and playwright Syed Shamsul Haq.
The multifaceted Bangla poet and writer breathed his last at a city hospital on Tuesday. His body was brought to the Central Shaheed Minar around 11am, where thousands of people, including his family members, friends, colleagues, relatives, political leaders, senior officials and admirers had gathered.
President Abdul Hamid paid his last respects to Haq by placing a wreath on his coffin around 11.25am. Later, he spoke to Haq’s wife Anwara Syed Haq, son Dwitio Syed Haq and daughter Bidita Sadi.
He expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is now in Washington, a team, led by her military secretary Maj. Gen. Mia Mohammad Zainul Abedin and special assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil, placed wreaths on the coffin.
Haq’s body was first carried to the ‘Channel i’ office, where a namaz-e-janaza was held. Then, his body was brought to Bangla Academy, where many eminent and promising writers, distinguished personalities and admirers paid tribute to him.
Finally, the body was taken to the Central Shahid Minar.
Eminent cultural personality Ramendu Majumdar said, “Haq’s entire heart was filled with Bangladesh and Bangabandhu.”
“Haq took Bangla theatre to the same height as that of literature. He has made his place in the field of Bangla literature,” said theatre activist Mamunur Rashid.
Writer Anisul Hoque said, “Haq connected Bangla literature with world literature.”
Historian Muntasir Mamun said, “There is no one to replace him in Bangla literature.”
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “He was a patriot and it was the foundation of his life.”
Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu said, “Shamsul Haq was not merely an individual. He was a personality in the history of Bangladesh.”
Another janaza was held on the Dhaka University mosque premises before Haq’s body was flown to his home district Kurigram in the northern region of the country. His mortal remains were laid to rest next to a mosque on the Kurigram Government College campus after a Namaz-e-Janaza was held there. Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor took part in the janaza.
Different socio-cultural organisations expressed deep shock at the demise
of the poet.
In a condolence message, Nazrul Institute stated that Haq’s work would remain memorable to the nation. His death has created a vacuum in the field of literature and culture, and it will never be filled, it added.
Engineers’ Institution stated in a condolence message that Haq was a man of valour nurtured by the spirit of independence. He played a big role against militancy, terrorism, anarchy and communalism, it said,
adding that the nation would remember his role with respect.
Sector Commanders’ Forum said Haq had dreamt of a Bangladesh imbibed with the spirit of the Liberation War and non-communalism.
Born in Kurigram on December 27, 1935, to Syed Siddique Husain and Halima Khatun, Haq dominated contemporary Bangla literature for over six decades.
He contributed in fields of poetry, fiction, play (mostly in verse), and essay. He wrote several movie scripts and penned many patriotic songs.
